Hernias are classified into different types depending on their location in the body. They include the following:

  • Femoral hernia: A bulge in the upper region of the thigh
  • Umbilical hernia: A bulge surrounding the belly button or navel
  • Incisional hernia: A bulge around or directly along a prior abdominal surgical incision
  • Inguinal hernia: A protrusion in the groin area
  • Hiatal hernia: A bulge in the upper region of the stomach

Ventral hernia may develop at any stage of life. Sometimes, they are present as congenital defects at birth. They may also develop during or after pregnancy, or in the months following a surgery. The risk of contracting ventral hernia increases if a patient begins heavy work relatively early after a surgery.
